Below are some of the most commonly asked questions when seeking to obtain a forklift licence in Melbourne, Victoria

Are there any pre requirements for a forklift licence?

There are some requirements for you to obtain your forklift licence. The main one is that you successfully complete a forklift training course conducted by a Registered Training Organisation.

You must be least 18 years of age.

It is also advisable to have a basic understanding of both written and spoken English. That way you can understand and pass the theory component of the examination.

When you pass your forklift test, will also require 100 Points of ID for applying for your forklift licence.

What does it mean by LF and LO?

As you probably know, an LF Licence allows you to operate any forklift except those which are classified LO.

An LO class of licence allows you to operate an Order Picker/Stock Picker.

However, the more common forklift licence, and one used in most warehouses is the LF.

What’s the mimimum age to obtain a forklift licence?

The minimum age to go for and get your forklift licence is 18 years and older.

Even if you have some experience in driving a forklift, but still haven’t reached 18, then you will still have to wait until your 18th birthday to be eligible to apply for your licence.

Only under exceptional circumstances can you apply to Worksafe Victoria and ask for an exemption. This is rarely granted.

What do I do if I have a forklift licence from overseas? Do I still need to go for a forklift licence in Victoria?

Having a forklift licence in your country does not exempt you from a licence here. International forklift licences are not recognized in Victoria. This means you will need to be tested again and submit your application to Worksafe Victoria.

My boss said to get on a forklift at work. I don’t have my licence….is that ok?

You are allowed to operate a forklift at work. However, you need to be supervised by someone who holds a current forklift licence at all times. If they don’t have one, then you are contravening Worksafe Victoria.

How long do courses run?

Different RTO’s offer different forklift training courses. However, all RTOs will offer courses that are suitable for beginners. Most courses will range from one, two or three day courses.

Are there any RTOs who offer courses close to me?

As there are a number of RTO’s who provide forklift training, there will be some who offer a number of forklift training courses around Victoria. Our website makes it easy for you to find a RTO who offers forklift training close to you. Please note that our website is a resource for students. We do not conduct training or are a RTO.

I have a business. Can an RTO train my staff?

If you want training at your facility, some RTOs will come out to you. Some help a number of businesses train their staff onsite. However, the trainer and assessor will conduct checks to identify whether you have the appropriate facilities.

Are assessors certified?

All RTO assessors are all Authorised Certificate Assessors. All have many years experience with forklifts and training students and are required to have current industry experience. That means they are able to quickly pick up on difficulties you may have on a forklift.

When I come in my Forklift training, what should I wear?

When you come in for forklift training, you may want to wear something comfortable. However, you must wear closed shoes. As safety is vital, RTO’s will not let you wear open footwear of any kind. These include, thongs, sandals, crocs, etc.
